The Website
Welcome to Language Arts! We have an exciting year ahead of us. We have a lot of work to do, and each class will be filled to the brim with reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities. I am so excited to get to know all of you and guide you on a literary journey this year.
This will be our class website for the year. The "Calendar" tab will include unit outlines each trimester, as well as a calendar. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please contact me using the above information. I will try to keep it as up-to-date as possible with unit outlines, current assignments, rubrics, and anything else we might need or work on in class. Check the tab corresponding to your or your student's grade to find copies of assignments we are working on in class.
I look forward to getting to know you and your parents this year!

Teaching Philosophy
So why are we here - you in my class, me as your teacher? To me, English and Language Arts is the most important subject a student can ever study because reading and writing are fundamental, foundational skills necessary for students to reach their full potential of success. Through reading, students gain a fuller understanding of the human condition and experience as well as become more empathetic, but there is no reason for reading to be a chore. Many times students feel a disconnect between their lives and fictional characters from a hundred years ago, so students should have a selection of modern novels and texts to analyze that will appeal to individual interests and curiosities. Additionally, although reading gives students a window through which to see themselves, composition is an outlet for students to creatively express themselves. Even an essay can be poetic. Perhaps the majority of students will only need to write professional emails and reports once they enter their careers, but creative fictional and nonfictional writing can engage the mind and the heart of the audience, as well as the author’s.
Course Description
The Language Arts program is designed to help students express themselves more easily and effectively through writing and speaking. The course includes study of the fundamentals of grammar, literature (short stories and the novel), and the process of writing (narration, description, exposition and persuasive). Students focus on writing a unified, coherent paragraph which logically supports a topic sentence by using specific details. Students also have opportunities to write creatively. This is a full year class which will be taken every day.
